“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” The education system of our nation has gradually improved in some aspects. If we consider technical and medical education, India is the largest producer of doctors and engineers in the world. But, why are we progressing only in the external sciences and neglecting the spiritual science which is above all the sciences. Spiritual science is our heritage and we need to preserve it. So, we need to think, how to sustain this heritage being forward within the new technologies.
If we look back in the history of our nation, we see that children were sent to Gurukuls for their education. They used to live in the Gurukuls with their teachers and used to learn spiritual knowledge. The teachers used to narrate them the Vedas, the Purans and other religious books. But, nowadays we are only focusing on the technical education i.e. job oriented education. Youths are mainly focusing on the education which could make their life more materialistic and luxurious. They are not interested in the subjects like spirituality and social service. The main reason behind this is that they are unaware with the prospects of spirituality. So, we need to focus on how to make them realize that the real success is in knowing the relation between man and the absolute one (i.e. Atman and Parmatman). If we can make them realize this eternal relationship, we can change their aspects towards the life. This can make them understand that both technical and spiritual developments are necessary for the development of the humanity in this world.
We want education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, and the intellect is expanded. What a person does is mainly influenced by his character so, it is duty to impart the knowledge which is character building not only carrier building. Nowadays every educational organization is trying to deliver only carrier-oriented education. It’s ok but, a carrier without character is not what required.
“To me the essence of education is concentration of mind, not the collecting of facts. If I had to do my education over again, and had any voice in the matter, I would not study any facts at all. I would develop the power of concentration and detachment, and then with a perfect instrument I could collect facts at will.” These are words of Swami Vivekananda and this is what required in every field of education. All the miseries come because we fail to detach ourselves from the materialistic objects and later we fail to concentrate on our main objective. Some drastic changes are required to the education system to impart the real knowledge which can lead students towards the path self-realization.
What we require is to merge the Science and technology with Vedanta. Vedanta describes that all knowledge exists within man and it requires only an awakening and that much is the work of a teacher. So we need to couple both carrier-oriented education and character-oriented education which will lead the man to the absolute one.
